It is one of the biggest nights in the music business and it seems that the American Music Awards was a night to celebrate the achievements of the fairer sex.
Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez were among the female stars scooping up the gongs leaving their male counterparts curiously empty handed.
But it was 21-year-old Swift's night, as she bagged not only the honours for best artist and album in the country category, but also the big one - artist of the year.

Her choice of a glittering gold column dress couldn't have been more appropriate, though as she returned to the winners podium time and time again, she seemed unprepared for the glory.
Swift who was highly celebrated at the Country Music Awards was certainly feeling it, her friend Selena Gomez enveloped her in a warm embrace from friend Selena Gomez before her fellow winners started to lining up to hug the star.
Taylor Swift accepted her awards and appeared more surprised by each gong.
As she scooped her first award she told the crowd: 'Thank you so much oh my goodness, this is amazing.'

She thanked her band and crew as well as her fans for 'filling up the arenas' and she also thanked her brother who she had brought along to the awards ceremony.
And as she accepted the award for Country Album she enthused: 'You have no idea how much it means to me. I’m so thankful I’m so thankful thank you for giving me this award.'
Minaj, meanwhile, who had put on an explosive performance with David Guetta to open the ceremony held at the Nokia Theatre, won the Favourite Album Award in the Rap/Hip Hop category for Pink Friday as well as landing the coveted Favourite Artist Award in the same category.

Beaming the rapper and singer told the crowd: 'There's so much love in this room.'
The girl power continued with Katy Perry, who had showed off her curves in a stunning Vivienne Westwood dress on the red carpet, who was given a special honour to signify five of her songs from her album hitting the number one spot.
She gave a shout out to her fans and record label, and mentioned her mammoth Teenage Dream tour, which is coming to an end soon.

The California Girls singer took to the stage in her pink performance ensemble and was handed the gong by Heidi Klum.
The pair shared a kiss before Katy gave her thank you speech.
After her seriously raunchy performance which saw her strip off on stage Jennifer Lopez donned a sheer embellished gown to collect her award for Favourite Latin Artist.

Reflecting on the past year JLo told the crowd: 'It's been up and down and just exciting and overwhelming and so many things.'
'I'm grateful for all my blessings,' she gushed, before thanking her 'family' and her 'babies.'
Not all the winners were able to attend the ceremony and Rihanna gave her thank you speech via video link as she was in London.
The We Found Love singer was honoured with the award for Favourite Soul and R&B album for Loud.
British sucess story Adelewas also awarded the award for Favourite Album but given her recent throat surgery was also unable to attend while Beyonce failed to show, giving her thanks in a pre-recorded message.

While it might have seemed like it was all about the girls a handful of male stars managed to get up onto the stage.
Bruno Mars was awarded the gong for Favourite Male Artist and he took to the stage and decided to share the love with his 'homies'.
He said: 'If the fans don’t mind I would like to share this award with my homies Justin Bieber and Pitbull.'
Maroon 5 were awarded the gong for Favourite Male Band, no doubt off the back of their huge hit Moves Like Jagger, which they took to the stage to perform later in the evening.
Other winners included Lady Antebellum, Hot Chelle Rae and Usher.
